Dominica Summer 2012
Who knew I would end up going to Dominica the summer after my freshman year of college? I didn't even know there was a difference between Dominica and the Dominican Republic in March of 2012. I will get 3 credit hours for BIOSC 496 that I can use toward a science requirement for my major. We will be researching aquatic life and observing the conservative Catholic culture. My trip is scheduled for June 7th-21st. I have seen a few pictures of the beautiful waterfalls and mountainous hiking trails; I'm really getting excited about it!
After an interview with the professor running the program, I started looking into all the immunizations I would need. I was afraid that I wouldn't have enough time to complete the 2-part series for Hepatitis A shots, but several nurses and websites assured me that the first shot would give me the protection I needed for six months before the second shot was due. I also am going to get injections for yellow fever and typhoid. We will be watching bats come out one night, so it wouldn't hurt to get a rabies shot even though we will probably be a safe distance away.
I will travel with the professor for the course so I don't get lost in the airports. Then I will be staying at Clemson University's research facility while in Dominica. The professor, Dr. John Hains, has gone to Dominica for many years doing research and will be our driver. We will go everywhere as a group; there will be about 5-7 of us. The other people in this group are currently teachers; the group with mainly students is going earlier in May. As a future teacher, I look foward to hearing their advice and working with possibly future peers.
